Welcome to Hatch Fly Fishing New Zealand.

We take you guided fly fishing for trout in the picturesque rivers, streams and lakes of the Wanaka and Hawea region. You will be fly fishing around Wanaka for totally wild brown and rainbow trout, employing classic New Zealand South Island fly fishing style in clear water. When possible, your quarry is first spotted, then stalked or ambushed before being presented with a dry fly or nymph.
We had some fantastic fly fishing this past season, with plenty of well conditioned trout and smiling anglers. There is an extremely high return rate, with many clients enjoying their seventh year with Hatch Fly Fishing.

This spring the rivers and stillwaters have been fishing well, when we can access them. Spring this year has also brought the usual increase in rain and wind, which is typical for the time of year, so we have been flexible to work around the weather.

Our main backcountry season runs from November until May. Due to a late cancellation, I now have some availability in late December, which is a rarity. This month offers relatively easy fly fishing, and plenty of options for small stream fishing with dry flies.

I have some availability in January and March, and welcome any inquiries. I will try my best to make the dates work for you, and if not, will be able to recommend another guide who will look after you.

As principal guide I (Craig Smith) have been fly fishing Wanaka for 12 years, and have over 30 years experience fly fishing around the lower South Island. Hatch Fly Fishing is a guiding service I set up 9 years ago.

All levels of experience are catered for, with quality equipment and patient fly fishing tuition for the novice, and expert local knowledge for the discerning angler. There are 1-2 anglers per guide to ensure maximum quality time on the water.
